Trust both ways

Rental gear is expensive. Without verification, we'd have to charge every customer a heavy cash security deposit upfront — which is unfair to the 99% of you who return equipment in perfect shape. Verification is how we move that trust from a stack of cash to a real, identified relationship.

What you get: a lower deposit (often zero), a faster checkout next time, and access to higher-value rentals like cinema cameras, drones and LED video walls.

What we get: confidence that the person at the door is the person who booked, so we can keep our prices accessible and our fleet well looked after.

Imagine you're renting a camera body whose buying value (what we paid to add it to our fleet) is LKR 500,000 for one day. Your security deposit is computed as:

We always quote the deposit on the buying value, never on the market/retail price, and it's refunded in full after the item is returned in original condition (minus any late or damage charges).

Total active time: about 20 minutes. Most customers do Standard at sign-up and finish Full over their next 2-3 rentals.

What we do
  • Store IDs, face captures and utility bills in an encrypted vault, access-limited to verification staff only.
  • Use them strictly to confirm you are who you say, and to release or refund your security deposit.
  • Keep them as long as you have an active rental relationship with us, and only as long as the law requires after that.
  • Show you, on request, exactly what we hold about you, and delete it when you ask (subject to legal hold).
What we never do
  • Never sell your data. Not to advertisers, brokers or marketers. No exceptions.
  • Never use your data for marketing on third-party platforms.
  • Never share documents with anyone outside Rentitem.lk staff, except under a lawful order from a Sri Lankan authority.
  • Never post on your social profiles. The Facebook and Google links are read-only trust signals.

Common questions

Verification FAQs

Do I really need to verify just to rent one item?
For a single low-value rental, Standard verification is the minimum — about 6 steps, under 10 minutes — and it's a one-time job. After that, every future booking on the same account skips the form completely.
How is the buying value of an item decided?
It's the price wepaid to add the item to our rental fleet — recorded in our inventory system. It is always lower than the retail / market price you'd see on a shopping site, so your deposit is always lower too.
Why do you need a utility bill — isn't the NIC enough?
The NIC confirms your identity. The utility bill confirms your address. Together they protect both sides — and they unlock a much lower deposit on higher-value rentals like cinema cameras and drones.
I'm a foreign visitor — can I still rent?
Yes. Use your passport in place of the NIC, with a clear photo of the photo page and your Sri Lanka entry stamp. A local contact (hotel / friend) is required as a backup reference. Foreign-customer deposits are quoted slightly higher to cover the difference until you become a repeat customer.
I run a registered company — what changes?
Apply for Business Verifiedinstead of Full. You'll need your business registration document, the business address with a map pin, and two staff contacts. Once approved we invoice in the company name and skip the cash deposit entirely — covered by the rental agreement.
How long does staff review take?
Inside business hours (9 AM-8 PM Colombo time, 7 days a week), under 1 hour for most accounts. Outside business hours, first thing the next morning. You'll get a WhatsApp ping the moment a step is approved or needs a retake.
What if a step is rejected?
We'll tell you exactly why on WhatsApp — usually a blurry photo or an expired ID — and you can retake / re-upload from the same screen. Rejections don't count against you in any way.
Can I downgrade or delete my account?
Yes — write to us and we'll delete your verification documents subject to any ongoing rental obligation (return + deposit refund must be settled first). Your account record is kept only as long as Sri Lankan tax / commercial law requires.
